Kevin
Written by Farrah Vartanian
Kevin "Freak" Avery is one of the main characters in the book, Freak the Mighty. Rodman Philbrick, the author, explains that Freak is an incredibly smart boy who suffers from Marquio syndrome -- a disease that causes the legs to be crippled. He has a Mom named the Fair Gwen, but he does not have a father figure in his life. Additionally, Freak is very intelligent and courageous. In this book, Philbrick reveals that Freak is intelligent because he reads his dictionary and keeps it with him wherever he goes (pg. 46). Usually, smart kids own a dictionary let alone carry it around everywhere. Philbrick also makes me infer that Freak is courageous because he stood up to Max's dad when he was about to hurt Max (pg. 131). This is because Freak has stood up to harder things in the past, so Max's dad is a walk in the park for him. Based on the character’s behavior and dialogue in this novel, you can clearly see that Freak is intelligent and courageous.
